Pads and hardware
Ceramic pads run $55–$150 per axle for most passenger cars. A hardware kit with new clips, shims, and caliper grease is a few dollars and should always be included.
Rotors
Vented rotors add roughly $75–$170 per axle. Resurfacing is cheaper but only viable when the rotor is comfortably above minimum thickness.
Labor (book time)
Shops bill a published book time, not a stopwatch: about 1.2 hours per axle for pads and 1.9 hours with rotors, multiplied by the local hourly rate.
Extras that move the number
Electronic parking brakes need a scan tool to retract the caliper. Performance and heavy-duty applications, seized hardware, and brake fluid flushes all add cost.

Brake pad cost questions
- How much does a brake pad replacement cost?
- Most drivers pay $180–$320 per axle for pads only, and $310–$520 per axle when rotors are replaced at the same time. Dealers usually land 15–35% higher than independent shops for identical work.
- Do I need new rotors with new brake pads?
- Not always. Rotors can be reused if they are above the minimum thickness stamped on the hub and are not scored, warped, or heat-cracked. Many modern rotors are thin from the factory, so replacement is common at the second pad service.
- How long does the job take?
- Book time is roughly 1.0–1.4 hours per axle for pads only and 1.6–2.2 hours per axle with rotors. Seized hardware, rusted caliper bolts, or an electronic parking brake that needs a scan tool to retract adds time.
- Front or rear brakes first?
- Fronts wear about twice as fast because they handle most braking load. It is normal to replace front pads two or three times for every rear service.
- What are the warning signs?
- Grinding or a metallic scrape when stopping, squealing at low speed, a longer pedal travel, a pulsing pedal, or a brake warning light. Grinding means the friction material is gone — stop driving and get it inspected.
- Is it safe to only replace the pads on one side?
- No. Pads are always replaced in axle pairs so braking force stays even. Mismatched friction material pulls the vehicle under braking.
